Salary
The starting salary for Fellows is the same as that for all other beginning teachers. Starting teachers in 2009-2010, with no previous classroom experience, typically earn between $31,300 and $34,665 in their first year. New teachers’ salaries will vary, and there may be potential to earn more than this, depending on district, performance pay, and the teacher’s education level.
Fellows (assuming an offer by the district and acceptance by the Fellows) become salaried employees of the Murphy Elementary, Phoenix Elementary, and Roosevelt School Districts when all teachers report back to work in advance of the start of the school year in July. Teachers normally receive their first paycheck during the first month of teaching. The Fellows program cannot guarantee in which of these districts an individual Fellow will secure his/her teaching position-and ultimately it is the Fellow's responsibility to secure a position. Fellows’ teaching position in one of these districts will be dependent on districts’ needs and the district hiring process. Summer Stipend
Fellows will benefit from the Phoenix Teaching Fellows Training Institute, five weeks during the summer and free of cost. In addition, Fellows receive a $2,000 pre-tax transitional stipend. The stipend is distributed after the end of the Training Institute to help defer the cost of living. Because of the timing of the training stipend and because the time between the end of training and a Fellow’s first paycheck may be lengthy, we strongly encourage Fellows to take appropriate measures to ensure their financial well-being during this time.

Teaching Fellows AmeriCorps Education Awards
First year Teaching Fellows may be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award after successfully completing their first year of teaching. The award, which is valid for seven years after issuance, may be used to pay for certification or future education costs, including the repayment of eligible student loans.
Loan Forgiveness
Fellows may be eligible for loan cancellation or deferment of Perkins and Stafford student loans. For details about eligibility, please contact your loan provider directly to confirm whether programs are available for individuals who make a commitment to teach full-time in under-resourced schools.
