We want people with little or no teaching experience but who are driven to succeed. There is no one profile for an ideal Teaching Fellows candidate; Fellows can span a wide range of backgrounds, bringing a diverse set of talents and skills to the program.
This program is specifically designed for driven college graduates who may not have a degree in education, and professionals from other fields seeking an alternate route into a career in the classroom. Review the Eligibility section of this website for more details on the requirements to apply.
"This has, honestly, been the greatest, most worthwhile experience of my professional life. I am so proud to be a part of this organization and hope to be involved with it and with education for many, many years to come."
- 2008 Teaching Fellow
The priority application deadline is February 2, 2009. Apply today.
We want professionals who have excelled in their careers, who are ready to make a difference in our public schools. As a Fellow, you will use your life experiences to your advantage. The most successful teachers are those who leverage their diverse knowledge, experiences, and achievements into the classroom to positively affect the lives of their students. Whether your background is in social work, engineering, corporate management, healthcare, the arts, or raising a family, this is a chance to use your skills to make a difference in the classroom. The Teaching Fellows program provides you with a network of peers – dedicated individuals who, like you, want to make a difference in this community by changing the lives of children.
We want people fresh out of college with track records of success as students, who seek to close the achievement gap. You may have always wanted to become a teacher, although you did not major in education. You may have been a leader on campus and in your community, and you now seek a new way to continue to drive change. You may have a major in economics or physics, and want to share your deep knowledge in a subject area where high-quality teachers are needed the most. Applying to Phoenix Teaching Fellows is your chance to join a highly-selective program comprised of talented individuals from across the country, like you, who are making the choice to give back, to lead, and to learn by becoming public school teachers. Are you ready to take on the urgent responsibility of closing the achievement gap, starting in your classroom? Apply today.
We want people driven to do something that matters for the students of Phoenix. We are looking for candidates who are interested in teaching in subject areas where high-quality instruction and commitment are needed the most. Teaching Fellows will teach language arts, math, science, elementary education or special education. This is your chance to go beyond your perceived limits each and every day to affect students’ futures. If you have what it takes to inspire children in these subjects, we strongly encourage you to apply now.
"I was apprehensive about giving up my current career to pursue teaching. Once I arrived at the institute and met the high caliber of individuals I was going on this journey with, I have since become very confident in my decision and excited about the future."
- 2008 Teaching Fellow
We want individuals looking for meaningful work and people who understand that a teacher’s strengths and skills can change numerous lives. Strong candidates are those who are committed to having a positive effect on student achievement, who display excellence through their previous endeavors, and who are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to reach and influence students – especially those in under-served areas – on a daily basis.
In areas where 39-40% of students live in poverty (as they do in Murphy Elementary School District) or where 76% of students are on free or reduced lunch (as they are in Phoenix Elementary School District), we know that our students deserve the highest standards of education to open opportunities. With increasing student enrollment, the need for additional dedicated educators is urgent. When more than half of our fifth grade students are not meeting math standards (as in Murphy Elementary School District), while the state average has 68% students meeting or exceeding this standard, we call on committed new teachers, like the Fellows, to join our efforts to close the achievement gap. As Phoenix Elementary School District outlines in its “Blueprint for Student Success”, “all children can and will learn.” It is up to high-quality, dedicated teachers – such as those that enter our districts through the Phoenix Teaching Fellows program – to ensure students’ success.
Are you inspired to join a cohort of new teachers dedicated to working in high-need schools? Apply today. The priority application deadline is February 2, 2009.
